Tarheel Reader – Write Social Stories

Tarheelreader.org is a website full of free, easy to read books that are accessible via computer, tablets, touch screens, IntelliKeys and switches.

The awesome thing about this site is that you can write your very own short stories.  You may upload your own images or use the large collection from flickr.

Another great thing about tarheelreader.org is the fact that you can save the books to your computer as well as print out books as a powerpoint.  This way it can be treated like a real book.

The benefit of having the stories online makes reading a bit easier for those that cannot read.  You can pick from different types of voices, though all sound a bit robotic.  Most of the time I chose the male voice because my students with Autism respond better to a lower tone voice.

I have used this site multiple times.  From the example video below (going to the library) to preparing my kids for the dentist.  It’s a great way to help with transition as well as learning new tasks (riding a bike, using the vacuum, etc).  It can also be about topics of interest, like the image below.tarheel book example

The biggest thing I love about this site, is the fact that you can create age appropriate books.  Meaning, books can be created for an adult with special needs that may be on a 1st grade reading level.  If you think about it, there aren’t many books available that discuss high school or adult related topics at lower reading levels.

Back when I taught adults with special needs at the high school level, an english teacher had her regular education students create books for my students.  She also had her students read/present the books to my students.  There were topics about dating, going to the movies, prom, etc.  It was one of the best service learning projects I have ever done with another teacher.   Now she had students type the words/sentences and used pictures from magazines glued to paper and laminated them.  How much better it would have been if we had know about this program back then.  I think it would have been more interactive and professional for both groups of students.

If this gets you interested you’ll need to follow the steps below: login infor

I hope you’ll take the time to try it out.  Check out my example video to help prepare and guide you for your future book making.  I apologize in advance for the blurry video taping.  I’m not as tech savvy as I’d like to be.

Thanks for taking the time to watch my how-to video.  I’ll be sharing more programs and apps like this one in the coming months.

If you have lived in the Brandon/Riverview Florida area for the past few years, you’ve probably heard about this local art festival.  I have had the privilege to participate in this event multiple times.  Winthrop Town Centre is a wonderful location full of people who enjoy community, art and some great food.  If you have a chance to stop by, do so.  There are some really talented people in our area.  You would be so amazed by some of the artwork and crafts that are for sale.

Not only is artwork and food on sale at this festival but you get free entertainment too!  Local musical artists, Winthrop Charter School students music, entertainers and performers of all walks of life.  Seriously, this a great weekend get away that is so close to home.  Support your local small businesses and artists and connect to the community.

For about four years my class participated in this event and the students loved creating works of art and crafts!  Even more, they loved working the booth and seeing people enjoying their work.  Here are a few pictures of some of the unique work my students have done.  Trust me there are a lot of booths with many different items and interests that you’ll be sure to find something you admire.

There are many opportunities for children to enjoy this event as well.  So bring the kids and encourage them to enjoy the arts. The Art Factory will be open to help kids get inspired and create something to take home to remind them of the artist in them.

Art lovers of all sorts are selling their priceless works of art as well as crafts on March 25th and 26th (2017).  The Art Festival is located in Winthrop Town Centre area off of Bloomingdale and Providence.  There is a large field area behind Boca’s Restaurant that will be filled with tents ready for customers. Hope to see you there!

Foundation Coffee Co.

Looking for a delicious and artful cappuccino? Foundation Coffee Co. ranks up there for quality coffee and artistic touches.  And I don’t just mean in their coffee drinks.  Both locations have unique settings that captivate the eye and encourage relaxation with a bit of industrial creativity.

As you now may know, Foundation Coffee Co. has two locations in the Hillsborough County area.  Foundations first location started in Riverview on Boyette Rd. It has a beautiful outdoor setting with an appealing amount of seating.  They have a high class trailer where they brew their specialty coffee. Not interested in Coffee?  Well they even have a few smoothies and baked goods from small businesses around the Tampa area. Just want to enjoy the scenery?  Find a comfy seat and enjoy the weather.  There is complimentary water to sip on while you take in your surroundings.  Dogs are welcome to enjoy the setting too.

The Tampa location is a beautiful brick building that makes you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time.  As you walk in you are taken back by the craftsmanship of each item chosen and built for this particular setting.  Comfortable seating, a water feature to gaze at and listen to, an amazing coffee drip system lifted up against a wall, historic photos and an amazing back patio that also has a creative water feature.  Consider yourself lucky as you sit and sip your coffee here.

If and when you have time to visit make sure to check out the artwork on the walls.  An art agency called FRINGE Creatives helps artists sell their work in different social hang outs around Tampa.  If you find yourself interested in one, they are for sale.  It’s just another great way that Foundation Coffee Co. supports their small business friends.

Both locations are a great place to enjoy friends and relationships. Each location focuses on their community and works to serve their customers appropriately.  They recognize that they are a small business and enjoy helping other small businesses.  And though they may be small they have big dreams.  They recently began renting out their coffee shop in downtown Tampa for small events (you can rent it too by going to their website).  They support the monthly Indie Flea Market. And they have even created a portable coffee station for events, like weddings.

I’m learning a lot from these two entrepreneurs.  I’m also excited to let you all know that we have teamed up and I am selling my macarons at the Foundation Coffee Co. in Riverview Fl.  Stop by and try them.  I would love to hear from you and any feedback would be helpful.  Hoping to perfect these delicate cookies and learn more about owning my own business.  Thanks Foundation Coffee Co. for your support and encouragement!

Building Imaginations – Dress Up Furniture

Imagination is so important.  I love giving my children the opportunities to try and/or practice being anything they want to be.  My oldest daughter loves dressing herself.  She rotates between ninja and princess most of the time.  The fun part about making special furniture pieces like this one, is the fact that I can enjoy it right along side my girls.  We have had our fun acting as ballerinas or super heroes flying through the house.  But the best one yet; is when we act like British ladies with adorable hats at a tea party.  That one is my favorite.

img_9562

Don’t worry this didn’t cost an arm and an leg and didn’t take nearly as much time to complete as I thought it would.  Yes we had to sand it, prep it with white primer paint, and then tape it off to do the two tone color effect.  Knowing that this was going to be used by kids, I wasn’t too hard on myself to make it “perfect” (I even let the girls have a go with the painting too).  It will get scratched, dinged and even colored on :/.  Don’t fret, the best part is witnessing it being enjoyed.

You can find all sorts of furniture for inexpensive prices in all sorts of areas.  Mondays and Tuesdays are a great place to start at Goodwill.  I have found many items at garage sales and have even been able to find a couple items in the trash/free pile on front lawns.  This particular piece was found at Lighthouse Ministries (similar to Goodwill but Christian based values) for $25.

img_6454

The primer and light pink paint color I had to purchase from HomeDepot (about $15 – $20), but I already had leftover bright pink paint (always check what you have in your house before spending your money, you’ll be surprised by what you find).

img_6527

Once all the painting was done and dry I made sure to spray paint a sealer over it, twice (You can find spray paint sealer at Walmart for pretty cheap about $5).  Make sure you let it dry in a covered area outside.  It takes a few days for the spray paint smell to disappear.

My husband had the pleasure of cutting the $9 wooden round dowel and screwing in the two closet pole sockets ($5) to hold the pole in place (make sure it is kid safe – meaning they will try and hang on it, pull it and whatever else they can think of).

img_9566

Last but not least, I had a few leftover cabinet knobs ($5) from another project. These two cute knobs were on clearance at JoAnns.  It just helped pull it altogether.

img_9567-1

In all, this piece cost us around $65.  Well worth it in my eyes, especially since some of the items purchased will be used on other products.  This is also an item I’d like to put in my future tearoom when I have enough room for a children’s tea area.  I look forward to the day when I can watch parents play pretend with their children at my tearoom 🙂

I am NOT receiving compensation for any of the materials suggested here.

Thanks for reading,

Katie

Dreams for an Inspirational Business

What is the purpose of having a blog for a tearoom that I don’t own yet?  We all have hopes and dreams that we long to achieve.  Well, a family friendly tearoom with an adult special needs program is mine.

I have never owned my own business before; though I have run a school based coffee business (but that story is for another day – check my ‘about’ me page for more details).  Each day I’m learning new things about myself, tea, crafts, special needs and business planning.  Part of my dream includes trying all of these new learnings together.

My vision is simple: To use my passions and skills so that we may benefit from one another.  Then, when I do finally have my tearoom, I will be able to bring people together with each visit and encounter.  But what does that look like?  I would like to inspire others to join me in empowering those with disabilities, build compassion/character in each other, and encourage uniqueness all while satisfying your taste buds.

Community involvement is a huge part of the mission/vision of PeachPearPlum.  From the arts (music, crafts, stories, etc), working with schools to increase Service Learning opportunities, as well as increase knowledge and comfort around people with disabilities.

This blog is here to help me stay focused on my dream as well as entertain, guide and educate others.  My posts will range from tea decor, crafts and recipes, to special needs job skills and accommodations.

I look forward to trying new things, building on what I already know and receiving feedback/knowledge from my readers.  I invite you to learn and dream along with me.
